139 East 95Th Street New York, NY, United States 10128

139 East 95th Street- THE HISTORY 139 East 95th Street, also known as the Stefan Cavallo house was constructed in 1901. In 1919/20 the property was converted to a single-family townhouse and a penthouse was added in 1932. The property is situated on a most desirable tree-lined block within the Expanded Carnegie Hill Historic District. It stands next to a row of three delightful Queen Anne-style houses completed in 1888 that have their architectural style and charm in common. This home is now for sale for the first time in over 60 years. The Stefan Cavallo house was featured in both Esquire and Vogue magazines in the 1960's. Stefan Cavallo was an aeronautical engineer and test pilot in the 1940's and an integral part of NACA (National Advisory Committee for Auronautics). Cavallo's wartime service with NACA were critical to the U.S. Army Air Forces and Navy's successful operations during World War II. The flight tests conducted by this small group of test pilots helped improve American combat aircraft design performance and capabilities. The testing was critically important for the war effort and helped save the lives of those serving in combat. In addition, Stefan created an experimental helmet that is featured Type A-13A oxygen mask and Polaroid goggles that were worn during flight. It is said to be the first helmet to incorporate skull protection, oxygen, communications and eye protections in one unit. This was a huge accomplishment not only for Mr. Cavallo, but also for the Air Force. It influenced the designs of other hard helmets post World War II and can be seen at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. Stefan and his wife, Bernice, an exceptional decorator, well known and in demand in fashionable New York City and beyond, resided in this beautiful home while raising their family in the 60's. During this time, Stefan took over his parents' renowned furniture manufacturing business. Louise and Stefano Cavallo were immigrants from France and Italy who founded the business in 1918. Stefan continued the family legacy and their offerings became a well-kept secret of architects and interior designers throughout his life. After Bernice's passing Stefan Cavallo resided in the home until his recent passing at the age of 101. 139 East 95th Street- THE PROPERTY This beautiful home can be re-created to your own vision with approximately 3,740 square feet on four stories to work with.
