Nestled in the historic centre of a charming wine-producing village 10 minutes from Obernai, the history of this unusual 660 m2 building dates back to the 17th century. An integral part of a former abbey, it includes the porter's house and part of the religious building's secretary's house. In the 1970s, it was given an original reinterpretation organised around a monumental fireplace designed by Jacques Couëlle. Now used for seasonal rental, this unusual place has exceptional volumes.
A discreet door gives access to a small courtyard marking the transition with the village. As soon as you enter, the subtle mix of natural materials and the play of half-levels catch your eye. The imposing exposed beams contrast with the immaculate whiteness of Jacques Couëlle's projected-sculpted concrete.
A majestic hall distributes a living room space coiled in the hollow of the first fireplace. It is extended by a dining area perched on a promontory concealing an indoor swimming pool and from which the 11-metre height of the building can be admired. An arched opening leads to the outside of the building where a second courtyard is revealed. Adorned with Gothic remains recovered from a Provencal chapel, it offers a romantic atmosphere and a view of the church tower.
A vast cellar dating from the origins of the building is overhung by a solid wood staircase leading to the first night space. It consists of three bedrooms, a bathroom and a sauna. The staircase continues to the upper level where a fourth bedroom, a bathroom and a kitchen are located. All of these spaces are now the guest flats.
In the centre of the building, the chimney houses a second fireplace and a second lounge area, which is also extended by a dining room with a view down to the lower level and the superb Provencal Gothic bay that was integrated into the building in the 1970s.
A staircase decorated with ironwork leads to the top level, which reveals a vast reception room nestled under the roof structure. In addition to the third hearth of the fireplace, it also houses a library where one can recognize the rounded and instinctive forms of Jacques Couëlle.
An independent flat offers more conventional spaces with a kitchen with a central island extended by a living room with a cathedral ceiling overhung by a mezzanine. The latter opens onto a pleasant terrace. The night space is composed of a small living room with fireplace, a large bedroom with its custom-made storage space and a bathroom.
An independent studio and a garage accessible from the street complete the services of this property where the different architectural styles, witnesses of a more or less distant past, form a harmonious and surprising whole.
